Music that Touches the Heart

Tainan is the ancient capital of Taiwan with profound historical and cultural wealth. Important historical sites, age-old districts and cultural relics are abundant in the city. A walk around old town Tainan, when one is immersed in the unique atmosphere of the city, is like a journey back in time.

The 2022 Tainan International Music Festival (TIMF), highlighting local characteristics of the city, makes possible the concept that the entire city is the performance stage for the musicians. We have the honor to invite Berlin-based pianist Eva Yulin SHEN to serve as the artistic director and curate a myriad of mesmerizing programs for the audience. The performances, including classical, jazz, modern, opera, musicals, and guitar music, blend in the historical ambience of Tainan, showing the inclusivity of this international music festival. For the TIMF opening, we have the Romantic Opera Concert held at the Eternal Golden Castle, where globally-acclaimed opera singers and musical performers perform with famous musicians in Taiwan. Legendary String Gala Concert gathers musicians of multiple generations, all the way back to BBB Children's Orchestra, to witness the prosperous and extraordinary musical development in Tainan. Heartbeat-My Innocent Conversation with Music is a collaborative performance by Tainan Chinese Orchestra and TNNU Chinese Orchestra. Seeking and Pursuing: Candlelight Concert features the exquisite performance by countertenors at the Tainan Arts Museum. Capriccio: Classical Guitar Concert is a solo virtuoso performance by Chia-wei LIN, a classical guitar prodigy who have won major international awards. There are also a harmonica performance, a concert by the Taipei Male Choir, and Everybody Loves Musicals, a show that highlights professional musical performers. We hope to fully showcase the breadth of musical talents and the diversity of musical genres here at the TIMF.

For our outdoor performance, we bring our musical performances to a number of special venues around Tainan—100 cellos along with an ancient ballad troupe to perform with at Erliao Sunrise Pavilion, a jazz performance with a vintage style market fair on the aqueduct bridge across Zengwen River, and a concert under the starts by the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra at the family- friendly Tsou Ma Lai Farm. With these programs, we hope to bring an unprecedented musical experience to our audience with the entire city as the performance stage for music.

We believe that the TIMF is an important cultural event that is inclusive and encompassing, and that is why we bring together artists from a diverse range of music genre. Despite the pandemic, let us continue to share great music that touches people’s hearts, and also create opportunities for the world to hear the music that belongs to the people and city of Tainan.
